So you haven’t exercised in a while or are not in the habit of exercising, you’re out of shape, and maybe you’re in the company of guilt and laziness that keeps you from getting started, once and for all!
Before crying about it, read the article by Professor Daniel Lieberman, an expert in human evolutionary biology at Harvard. “It is natural and normal to be physically lazy,” he writes. “Our ancestors, [he continued], exerted so much energy hunting and gathering that they sought rest whenever they could. We inherit these old instincts, but we create this dream world and the result is inactivity.”
The thoughts of Professor Daniel and many other experts can comfort our guilt to an extent; however, it will not be an excuse for us not to exercise, knowing well how critical exercises are for us to have a good quality of life.
Said all that, the wisdom of today is that you start it easy and through fun.
“We are a playful species,” says primatologist Frans de Waal of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and we maintain our youthful sense of fun well into adulthood. And one of the acts humans can do for fun is dancing! Do you agree?
The natural urge to dance may have existed in early primates before they evolved into humans. Archeology yields traces of dance from prehistoric times, such as the 10,000-year-old tomb paintings depicting dancing figures from c. 3300 BC.
When the human body gracefully makes itself vulnerable to music and surrenders its movements to the winds, magic often happens. Surely the senses and feelings felt when we dance could be described as something close to such happiness. Entering those “perfect moments” that we all want in life.
Dancing burns calories, strengthens muscles, improves balance, increases flexibility and gives the heart a good workout. Dancing has also been proven to increase cognitive development.
After dancing for a while, your body will be strong and active to choose other exercise programs. Whatever you want! There are countless good fitness programs to choose from.
Now that you feel your body is more active with the dance, you can start introducing other fitness programs that can be much easier.
Or, you may decide that dancing completes you. In this case, open your arms to release the dancer inside you and be your best self!
