First of all what’s a flash mob, where it comes from, and who came up with this idea.
A flash mob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform for a brief time, then quickly disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire, and artistic expression.
The term “FLASH MOB”, coined in 2003, and it started in Manhattan, is generally not applied to events and performances organized for the purposes of politics (such as protests), commercial advertisement, publicity stunts that involve public relation firms, or paid professionals. In these cases of a planned purpose for the social activity in question, the term SMARTMOBS is often applied instead.
The difference between flash and smart mobs is primarily with regards to their duration: a flash mob disappear quickly, but smart mobs can have a more enduring presence. The term flash mob is claimed to have been inspired by “smart mob”.
Flash mobs were invented as a fun social experiment meant to encourage spontaneity and large groups of people to take over public areas temporarily just to show it could be done. Flash mobs quickly became popular, particularly amongst young people. Videos of flash mobs went viral on YouTube.
Smart mobs are a large group of people mobilized by social media to meet in a public place typically for the purpose of social or political protest.
