You might have heard about the Guinness World Records, the ultimate authority on record-breaking achievements, but I bet you didn’t know there is a dance category. Do you want to know some of the most incredible Guinness world records in dance history? Let’s get started with these 5 amazing accomplishments, perhaps they motivate you to get into the dancing
world.
Sarah Patricia, best known as “Paddy”, is a British salsa dancer, who participated in the show Britain’s got talent, getting the ninth position. She is the current Guinness World Record holder for the “Oldest Acrobatic Salsa Dancer” at 85 years old. She started dancing when she was 2 years and a half, and she has practiced many disciplines such as flamenco, classic dancing, acrobatics, among others. She is a prove than there’s no limit age for dancing, if that is what you really want, then you can do it! And nothing better than this StepFlix Salsa class that might help you get the basic steps of this gorgeous rhythm.
This record was achieved recently in the Dominican Republic, the country where this rhythm was originated. This past November 3rd, 2019, 422 dance couples (844 people) gathered together in Spain Square, Santo Domingo to make history, surpassing Russia who gathered 330 couples in 2013 at the Lenin Stadium.
The partakers were rehearsing for 3 months the choreography created by Laura Ramirez and Marcos Taveras. The final result was a 5 minutes choreography with the song “El Merengón” by Joseito Mateo sounding in the background. The joy, excitement, and passion for dancing took place that day. If you want to feel that same energy you can start learning merengue with one of our StepFlix classes
The official representative of Guinness World Records Natalia Ramirez made sure that the event complied with all the established guidelines and requirements. It was a historical record that will be remembered by all the Dominicans.
The tap dancer Anthony Morigerato broke the record of the most taps in one minute with 1163 taps, performing 293 reverse paddles within the time period. The record was achieved at Eleanor’s School of Dance in Albany, New York, USA, in June 2011.
Anthony is a professional tap teacher, Emmy nominated choreographer and the director of “Operation: Tap”, an online forum that tries to immerse tap dancing into people’s consciousness. Tap dancing might look hard to dance, but with this StepFlix class, you can learn the right technique and apply it later to show off your incredible steps.
There was another Guinness Record related to tap: “The longest distance tap” danced by a male. A record of 32 miles (51.49 km), which lasted 7 hours and 35 minutes.
Mauro Peruzzi, best know as “Cico” from Italy performed 50 breakdance windmills in 30 seconds, getting the Guinness record at the Sony Ericsson in the United Kingdom, on October 10th, 2010. Windmills consist of rolling your torso continuously in a circular path on the floor, while your legs are in a V-shape through the air. Imagine how hard was to accomplish that goal without getting dizzy, it shows us that with discipline you can attain whatever you want.
On May 17th, 2017, the Brazilian dance instructor, Claudio de Oliveira, taught this dance style to 361 students in Buenos aires. The Samba class was streamed simultaneously online in other 4 cities: Bogotá, Lima, Santiago de Chile, and Quito; reaching an audience of 689 people and beating by far the last record of 250 people. The record was granted to a laboratory company called “Boehringer”, which was the one who organized this massive event. This Guinness record proved that working as a team brings better results.
Just like all these people you could reach any goal you have in mind, everything is about discipline, constancy and even more important: passion. If you can dream it, you can do it. Show yourself how capable you are and don’t wait too much to start doing what you love!
