I am not the most traditional person when it comes to rituals, but there is something that I highly cherish, and I can only see it in my head as a trailer of the best movie of my life. The first dance with my “life partner” witnessed by everyone we love and care.
As wonderful as that sound, we have never crafted this art together; we dance at parties the best way we can to the beat of “YMCA” or “ La Macarena”, but never together. This seemed like a dream far, far away, where first I would have to convince my better half of how wonderful it would be and how much it meant to me, and second, we would have to take a trip together to the unknown. While I was thinking about how to present this “project” to my “associate,” I did my research to assure that he would not only BUY IT but rather make him excited and eager about the adventure.
My mission: find ways to make our first dance our very own, express our personality, our love language, our humor, and essence, choosing a style, a song, or a bunch of them. Doing research on what we need to make it come true.
My objective: Create an experience that will not just last a two minutes song but that I am sure will bring laughter, memories, bonding, learning, and who knows, maybe even a hobby we can share
Bullet points to convince my better half:
– First of all, is FUN. Moving your body to the rhythm of the music is definitely a great stress reliever, and the positive feelings about the shared experience make couples excited to carve out alone time.
– Dance teaches communication skills and fosters respect.
– There is no more organic way to show love than through all our senses.
– It Is a Special Moment for the Two of us. These are memories that stay forever. Symbolizes how we will present our love to life. This is the first time as a married couple where we can support one another, regardless if it is something we are not 100% interested in.
– Exercise Together. I’ll be not only motivated by my dress but also to condition our bodies to a more confident balance and performance.
– Teamwork. why not start our marriage off with something the two of us worked on together.
– Date Night. Let’s pop open the champagne, the wine, and practice our new skills.
Men tend to be more rational, so here are the practical, functional facts we need to know to convince them about this idea.
Experts recommend beginning dance lessons at least four months before our wedding day. This will ensure we have enough time to absorb the skills we have to learn and feel confident dancing at our wedding.
Many couples take multiple lessons per week to help them retain information and speed up the learning progress, but a minimum of one lesson per week is recommended.
To get the most out of every lesson, we should schedule a time to practice at least three times in between lessons for 15 to 30 minutes each session.
Identify our needs and expectations as a couple. As the number of lessons we will need depends on a few factors:
-how good you want to become
-how often you are available to take lessons
-how fast you learn and etc.
You can expect to pay between $75-$150 for an hourly private wedding couple dance lesson in most US cities. But that’s just the base rate for a single hourly lesson. Many wedding couples book 10 to 20 private lessons to practice their first dance or nail a specific dance routine. Packages, timing and number of lessons will all factor into the total cost of your dance lessons.
The cost will vary according to the dance style, the studio, and the expertise of the instructors. Choosing the right studio for our lessons can also make a huge difference in how our Special Day comes together.
I believe I have enough information to accomplish the mission and objective now!
Now, what speaks to me?
Romanticism. Love is a dance, but not just a physical dance. It is a dance in the space of kindness. It frees our mind and body, giving us the freedom to be in the moment and remember how much we love one another. Is looking into each other’s eyes, anticipating the next move. It opens up energy channels of feeling and connection. It rejuvenates everything.
I can’t wait for the experience of practicing together, choosing our song, learning, having fun, and surprising ourselves with what we were able to put together, together.
I got inspired by the couple in the video below, to learn and use some tango dance moves for our first dance wedding. I found out that moves from any dance style can be used to dance any song, the most important is to learn the technique of the steps for both, my partner as a lead and me as a follow; then connect to the music and between us and enjoy the dance!
