Dancing through time

Did you know that dancing gives your body life and transmits energy? Dancing is a way to communicate bodily and emotional healing and music; therefore, dancing with music is to enter perfection. Dancing comes from ancient times as a communication method bringing changes through cultures, musical genres, and the passing of the years. In this blog, we will learn how dance has evolved by taking a trip through time.

Dancing In The 20s

These years were famous for the Flappers or Roaring 20s style, in which women would pale their skin with talcum powder, highlight their lips with a carmine red, and their eyes with black eyeliner. All this was encouraged by developing a dance style that was a mixture of the Charleston, the Shimmy, the Bunny Hug, and the Black Bottom. This movement gave way and origin to the types and rhythms that followed it, and today, many people have chosen to keep these styles alive in their important celebrations that transport them to their best times of life.

Dancing In The ’50s

In this era, the dances were characterized by their rock and roll genre, in which stroll or jitterbug movements were used, a group choreography between men and women highlighted for being flirtatious but decent at the same time. Besides, the dances were not only group dances but also individual and couple dances.

Dancing In The ’70s

In this decade, a musical explosion known as disco music, a combination of genres between soul and funk with Latin touches, took over the nightclubs and brought a mixture of extravagant dances, different genres, and old and new styles.

Dancing In The ’80s

Throughout these years, the sensuality with its soft movements of the lambada genre and, on the other hand, the heavy metal characterized by abrupt head movements accompanied musically by the guitar and drum bass delighted several generations of listeners and dance lovers.

The 90’s Decade

This era brought with it a change in music and, at the same time, in dance, as it generated a commercial style and awakened the love for hip-hop, a musical genre that already existed but was not very listened to, and this was its lucky time.

Dancing In The Year 2000

From this year on, reggaeton became much more known, an urban and Latin style that mixes reggae with hip-hop. It is characterized by being sexual, lewd, and explicit, creating, in turn, the dance known as “person,” which is danced individually to express yourself, compete, and attract attention; on the other hand, in pairs generating sensuality and in choreographies such as the well known Zumba.

Dancing Today

Currently, there are a variety of genres and dances with modern movements in which young people stand out for their style of attracting attention. Dances such as kizomba, bachata, swish and Zumba, salsa, and hip-hop, among others, are recognized. This is thanks to the diversity of genres and cultures that have enriched the art of dance and its forms of expression. Dance is an unpredictable and changing art that has notoriously evolved in great size, allowing us a life full of emotions and rich moments of adventure through music and its traditional costumes. Do you like dancing? Do you like music? Have you forgotten, or have you not been updated in movements? Dancing is not just about knowing how to move and knowing how to proceed; it is about opening up and expressing all your senses by connecting with the music and choreography. Latin rhythms have been a big part of dance in general that have also evolved through the times; however, styles such as Tango have been maintained for many decades and have been danced for more than a century worldwide. Salsa is the most danced style in the world; even today, it has been danced for over half a century. Merengue is one of the easiest Latin rhythms to learn. However, it has lost popularity to modern styles such as “Bachata sensual and fusion,” “Reggaeton,” and now “Brazilian Zouk,” which is gaining popularity in America and Europe. It’s incredible how dance is constantly changing and the wonder of us changing with it. The magic of feeling, seeing, and witnessing the art of dance is that we can live it in our daily lives and our most memorable moments. Would you like to live it?
