Where did the first Samba dancers appear?

The majority of the African slaves stayed in Bahia, a city multiculturally rich thanks to the miscegenation between natives, Africans, and Europeans, becoming, nowadays, the place with more quantity of Afro people in the world, after the African continent. That multi-ethnicity is the major tourist attraction for its population, also for artists focused on promoting samba and Brazilian dances and rhythms worldwide. Bahia was also the place where the people start talking about batuque, which is any African demonstration that includes dance, singing, and usage of percussion instruments; this was so entertained, and also a clear antecedent of Brazilian samba!

What is Lambada dance?

Lambada is a partner dance that came from the State of Pará, in Brazil. It became very popular during the 1980s and expanded all over the world, specially in South America, The Caribbean and Philippines. It has adopted aspects of dances such as forró, salsa, merengue, maxixe, carimbó and Bolivian saya, but it is way more sexy and fun than all of them! Lambada means erotic dance, reason why it got prohibited in many areas and kind of disappear for a while. However it never died, rather evolved into a more modern type dance now a days called Brazilian Zouk. Today, we have Lambada, LambaZouk and Zouk as three types of dance styles that can be danced to the same music beat but in different times.

The Boom of Brazilian Zouk

Brazilian Zouk… What? What’s that? I’m happy to share one of my latest discoveries about this dance. Brazilian zouk is a close couple dance from Brazil that started in the early 1990s. It is a social dance, meaning the purpose is to dance at parties where they play zouk music. The dance is not choreographed; the couples on the dance floor improvise to the rhythm of the song played by the DJ. However, the most common steps must be learned beforehand.
